A
recap of the 2007 event......
Sandy Hook Foundation’s Picture Perfect Day
By Bill Alcaro
Wispy strands of clouds framed an azure blue sky on this
perfect day for the 120 golfers who participated in the Sandy Hook
Foundation’s 18th annual golf outing on Monday, May 14, 2007. With
temperatures hovering in the mid 60’s, our intrepid lot set out to
conquer the beautiful and challenging links of Bamm Hollow Country
Club in Lincroft, NJ. While golf was the main item on the agenda,
the event was designed to raise much needed funds to support the
National Park Service’s effort to restore the historic mortar
batteries on Sandy Hook. Built in the late 1800’s, these mortar
batteries once operated to protect New York harbor in times of
war. The Foundation hopes to restore this area and create a
museum-like atmosphere that will be open to the public in an
effort to preserve our history for generations to come.

New at the outing this year was the Battle of the Banks and
Brokers, separate competitions for two Sandy Hook Foundation Cups.
The Banker’s Challenge was won by the Two River Bank squad of
Charlie Parton, Mike Kostelnik, Dick Cohen, and Frank Mazza.
Winning the Broker’s Challenge was the team from Morgan Stanley
comprised of Chris Shaw, Bill Waylett, Steve Braun, and Dan Sokol.
The winning teams each get their names emblazoned on the
Foundation Cups, and enjoy the honor of displaying the cup in
their office until next year’s competition.

outing and Pat is a Foundation board member
Following golf, everyone was treated to a cocktail reception and
awards gala. Guests enjoyed a presentation by Foundation trustee
Dave Hoder on the history of the mortar battery and the plans for
its restoration. Bidding was fierce on the silent auction items,
which included some wonderful gifts, such as a 2 night’s stay for
6 people at the Light House Keeper’s Quarters on Sandy Hook which
opened this past year. Restoration of this facility was made
possible with the help of funds raised in previous year’s golf
outings.

The Annual End of Summer Party
will be held Friday, September 5,
2008
What better way is there to say
good-bye to summer than celebrating with good food, great friends,
and a beautiful night on one of the finest beach locations on the
shore? The Sandy Hook Foundation’s annual End of Summer Party
held at the North Beach Pavilion with over 330 guests in
attendance honors the best the Jersey Shore has to offer.
From the Lusty Lobster, the Salt Creek
Grille, Bahrs Restaurant and Marina, the Flaky Tart, and Brennan’s
Delicatessen, a chance auction featuring wares from the area’s
preeminent merchants and local artists and dancing to the fabulous band
High Road.
Proceeds from the End of Summer Party
support projects of the National Park Service at Sandy Hook, including
maintaining the historic Lighthouse Keepers Quarters and the next preservation project, the restoration of the mortar
battery across the street from the Lighthouse. Other projects that the
Foundation supports are the free summer beach concerts, shore bird
protection, non-native plant removal, summer weekend ferry service
directly from NYC, the oral history project (in conjunction with Monmouth
University), and more.
